OK, bucko, you’ve come up with a great idea? Good for you! Now all you have to do is get it past the person who signs your checks.
The sad truth is that your client or boss may take that big concept of yours and stick it right back in your face.
At my old job I built an entire campaign on how nudists relied on our weatherman for the most accurate forecast. Yes, that sounds sort of dumb, but the spots were very entertaining and dead on in terms of message and branding. There was even a social media aspect to help sell the story. It was good stuff — you can read more about it on my blog — but the boss rejected the whole thing. Except for the spots airing once, it never saw the light of day.
Why not? Because he was affraid.
It’s OK to be affriad, quite natural actually. Local TV is a place that’s filled of old ideas on how to market itself. Consultants come to town and tell the management how their news should look and how it should be advertised and everyone marches along in lockstep. That’s why it looks the same in every city in the United States.
When you try to unleash unconventional techniques on a business steeped in traditional, don’t be surprised. Old style thinking can derail the greatest ideas
So what do you do when they won’t listen to you? That, my friend, is when it’s time to leave.
Yes, you need the money. We all do. But if you let somebody shut you down like that you won’t be happy. Oh, sure you can go ahead and do what they say. That’s a good short term solution. But meanwhile, go find another job or another client. And then get out of there.
